Revised School Immunization Regulations
The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) has recently revised School Immunization Regulations to include the requirement of four new vaccines for school, preschool and licensed child-care center attendance in September 2008.
The new requirements are:
1. Diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and pertussis vaccine (Tdap)--Adacel, Boostrix
One dose of Tdap, given no earlier than the 10th birthday, for all students in 6th grade born on or after January 1, 1997.
*children who received a tetanus booster dose less than five years prior to entering 6th grade will not be required to receive a Tdap dose until five years have passed.
2. Meningococcal vaccine--Menactra (preferred), Menomune
One dose of a meningococcal vaccine for all students in 6th grade born on or after January 1, 1997.
*This applies to students when they turn 11 years of age and attending Grade Six.
3. Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV)--Prevnar
At least one dose of PCV on or after their first birthday for every child 12 months through 59 months of age attending child-care or preschool; one or two doses for children younger than 12 months according to recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).
4. Influenza vaccine At least one dose of flu vaccine, given between September 1 and December 31 of each year, for children six months through 59 months of age attending child-care or preschool. Helpful Links
